More and more, we’re thinking about the after-effects of what we put on our skin. So, it’s little surprise that besides our faces, arms, and legs, we’re now pondering our pits.

If the idea of sealing off one of your body’s primary designated toxin-release areas with a mix of parabens, phthalates, artificial fragrance and God knows what else, was and is not appealing.   Then you are truly not alone.

Every day we hear from people are wanting to make the change from using chemical antiperspirants to natural deodorants, and asking us to recommend one.  So, we were really curious about all things ‘underarm’ and looked to find one that truly worked.

Why Are People Switching to Natural Deodorants Then?

Most people are opting for a natural deodorant for two main reasons. First, research into natural ingredients and formulations has helped increase effectiveness. Yes, there are natural options out there that really work!

Second, more people understand that humans need to sweat and that commercial antiperspirants block that natural function. Sweating helps balance salt levels and regulate body temperature. Many individuals don’t realise that sweat is odourless. The foul smell comes from bacteria on the skin. The apocrine sweat glands in the underarm area periodically secrete an odourless, oily substance that contains fats, steroids and proteins from within your body. It isn’t until it reaches the outer skin surface that microbial activity begins and causes odour.

Third, news about questionable ingredients in traditional deodorants has inspired individuals to avoid the harsh and potentially harmful components. In “5 Things Wrong With Your Deodorant,”2016 article in Time magazine, it states, “Blood tests show that many of the substances commonly included in deodorant products can, in fact, worm their way past the epidermis and into the body. Research also shows that some compounds used in deodorant are absorbed and stored in fat cells… experts are worried certain compounds in antiperspirant and deodorant could cause or contribute to developmental or reproductive issues, as well as cancer.”

That said, plugging your sweat glands with the likes of fragrance, aluminium, and powerful synthetic antibacterial agents right where so many of the body’s lymph glands, critical to the body’s immune system, isn’t my idea of looking after my health.

So, it’s time to switch, and protect our pits!

Will It Work? Or, Will I Pong?

Yeap! We hear you. Deodorant is probably the number one product we feel nervous about experimenting with. After all, if it doesn’t work, everyone around us has to suffer, too.

Let’s be frank. We truly want to be that kind of girl or guy that can wear natural deodorant, but when it’s 40+ degrees, and we’re melting (literally and figuratively) the thought of abandoning our super-duper, stop-all-sweat (totally toxic) antiperspirant in favour of some herbs and plants absolutely petrifies us.

Because anyone who’s taken a natural deodorant or two for a spin knows that, despite their myriad purported risks, standard deodorants simply work better than their natural counterparts. Or do they?

Well, we have found one that truly lasts the distance.

It’s Time To Go Free Range!

We road tested Free Range deodorants which are a range of silky, luxurious deodorant creams that combine an organic base of macadamia nut oil, cornstarch, beeswax and divine essential oils with natural sodium bicarbonate.

The testing criteria were very simple, we declared.   “We needed a natural deodorant that would last throughout the day, smell good, and not irritate our super-sensitive skin and worked on the sweaty blokes after a hard day’s work on the farm.”

And it stood up to the test way better than we thought it would.  It works. It smelt amazing.  The scent wasn’t overpowering and great for both guys and gals.

Active* the unisex formula for the active lifestyle. A refreshing blend of citrus and mint certified organic essential oils, loved by both men and women.   Active is not recommended for pregnant mums because it contains peppermint essential oil. * this is what we road tested.

ManPlus‘ formula – masculine strength when you need it.  Combines tea tree, peppermint and cedarwood atlas for antibacterial action that will see you right, even if you smell like a bear!

Super Sensitive‘ is for those who find deodorants (especially natural ones) cause skin irritation.  With significantly less sodium bicarbonate and extra essential oils for odour control, it is effective while being gentler on the underarm.  It is scented with orange, tea tree and spearmint essential oils.

How Do You Use it?

Spread a half-pea sized dab under each arm. Use less rather than more – just a little is very effective. Typical usage is once-a-day application, which gives all-day protection. It should be re-applied after showers, swimming, or changing the layer of clothing against your skin.

So, it’s Time To Switch, and Protect Our Pits!

Given that what you apply to your skin, particularly your sweat glands, absorbs into your body, goes into your blood stream and filters through your organs. Makes you think twice about what you’re slathering on your skin, right? Because let’s face it. Body odour. It’s a fact of life. Now, thankfully, there are healthier approaches to dealing with it!

Also, if you would like to try making a deodorant yourself, here is a great recipe to try.
