They say beauty is only skin deep, but it’s hard to believe that when you’ve got acne. Remember, you are not alone. In adults and teenagers, acne is very widespread and up to 90 per cent of people will suffer at some point. You can read more about acne here.
Natural acne treatments such as Manuka Biotic skincare products and Manuka essential oil can really help.
Almost all teenagers get pimples. Pimples happen when teens hit puberty because of hormonal changes. An oily substance called sebum clogs pores so pimples can appear on the face, neck, back, chest and shoulders. Pimples cause problems with self-esteem.
Adult women can experience changes in their skin because of hormone fluctuations in pregnancy or menopause. Female hormonal changes can lead to skin flare ups.
Stress, poor diet and nutrition can lead to acne skin problems. So can exposure to environmental toxins, pollution and hormone-disrupting chemicals.
Diet does not cause acne but can help in treatment. Clear, healthy skin needs a strong, well functioning digestive system. If you suffer from gas, indigestion, constipation, loose stools or bloating, you should sort out these digestive issues. Nutrition and supplements can help.
If your digestive system is working well and you still have outbreaks, look at diet and lifestyle.
What is acne and how does it form?
Acne is a chronic disorder of the skin’s sebaceous glands (oil glands). Almost every teenager and many adults will have an outbreak at some point.
Sebum, produced by the skin, is a good thing. It’s our skin’s natural barrier and a source of skin hydration. As you age your skin gets dryer because you produce less sebum. So a healthy production of sebum is great for young and healthy skin.
Skin acne starts with clogged pores. This happens when sebum gets “sticky” and stuck in the pores. Small blackheads or whiteheads can form and get inflamed or infected. This is when skin pimples form.
